character information
name: Odo

canon: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

canon point: Season 7 episode 14 - "Chimera"

age: Good question! There's some unclear information on the subject, but he was probably "discovered" about 38 years ago. By Changeling standards, he's still quite young.

(canon) background: Here

abilities:

Shapeshifting - As a Changeling this is what Odo was meant to do. This means the following:

- His "true" form is that of an amber colored gelatinous liquid. He must regenerate / return to his natural state about once every 16 hours for a period of rest.

- He can easily appear (and sometimes function) as various solid objects, surfaces, plants, or animals with near perfection. Mass and density varies. The combadge Odo wears is actually a part of himself, and it functions. Despite how awesome that sounds, his shapeshifting is substandard for his species due to being separated from them early in life. He cannot take the form of fire, for example. While imitating a humanoid he has difficulty forming details of the face.

- He can avoid some damage from weapons or objects by shifting quickly from solid to liquid. However, if he is solid and then taken by surprise, he is capable of being "knocked out" or stunned for a time. This suggests the forms are somewhat "locked" unless willfully undone.

- He does not require food or drink. He can survive without air, but does "breathe" to be able to speak or express himself. He has better temperature tolerance than a human's, but the optimal shapeshifting temperature is 17 degrees Celsius.

Examples of changeling effects from DS9

(( If this ability needs to be limited in some way, I completely understand and am open to talking about it. If I plan to use his shapeshifting for any sort of spying, I would only do so with consent from the other player(s) involved, and by making at least one tag to keep a record of my involvement in the situation / plot. ))

strengths:

Strong sense of justice - He cares a great deal about what is right and fair. While this often coincides with the rule of law, his sense of justice can at times go beyond what is "by the book," particularly if they are rules he does not agree with. He considers serving justice a large part of both his duty and his purpose in life.

Highly observant - Odo had to study humanoids extensively while learning how to mimic their appearance. This included not only shapes and contours, but behaviors, postures, facial expressions, and body language. It stands to reason that he also has to be observant of other creatures and objects before he is able to mimic them properly. This only compliments his abilities as an investigator. Once he remarked that "You can tell a man's intentions by the way he walks."

Analytical - Odo is able to draw logical conclusions based upon the information at hand. This likely comes from both working beside Dr. Mora in the lab, and working as an investigator. His orderly and thorough nature compliment this ability.

weaknesses:

Identity and Self-esteem issues - He has always been the outsider. Without a home, or even knowing what he was, Odo has always been felt out of place. Even though he eventually made friends and made a life for himself on Deep Space Nine, the sense of "otherness" has always stuck with him. To complicate the matter - once he did find clues to his origin and reunite with his people, it was only to discover that they were the creators of the Dominion - an enemy to the Alpha Quadrant as a whole. He disagrees with their political motives and methods, and thus does not fully identify with them, either. He is always torn between two worlds. In addition, he was given the name "nothing" by the Cardassians, which has had some negative psychological impact in the past.

Difficulty in social situations - Odo had to learn social interaction as much as he had to learn to take form. Though he makes great progress with this throughout the series, it is reasonable to expect that outside of his close friendships formed with those on Deep Space Nine, social activity with strangers is still somewhat uncomfortable. He also tends to keep to himself and is a very private person.

Mildly obsessed with order - Partially a racial trait, Odo feels the need to have things orderly, and is uncomfortable if his order is disturbed. For example, on one occasion a practical joke was played on him by Jadzia Dax, where she moved all pieces of furniture in his quarters just slightly to the left or right, throwing Odo's room into "chaos." In the past as Security Chief of Terok Nor, this need for order even compromised his sense of justice on at least one occasion.
